Completed works on Thorne Moors

May 1, 2023 | Humberhead Peatlands NNR team

The LIFE Moor Space project team have had a busy start to 2023 with lots of works taking place on Thone Moors.

The location of these works are off Goole Moor Tram, which is a long straight 3.6km pathway that runs across the northern end of Thone Moors. Historically this pathway was created as a tramway for the trains that ran on the moors during the peat extraction period. This does give us a well constructed pathway that can stand up to the occasional vehicle running along it, the downside is that a considerable amount of rail is hidden beneath the surface of the ground and can easily damage machinery working on site.

The first element to these works was the clearing of a drain that runs alongside Goole Moor tram. These works were focused on hydrology, much of the drain was blocked, either with silt or with vegetation. A clearly defined drain can now be seen and should help us with controlling the water on site.

The second element was the creation of a firebreak along the whole stretch of Goole Moor Tram. This consists of the clearance of scrub from 4m either side of the tram. Our Humberhead Peatlands NNR team will maintain this firebreak. Should we have a fire on site, this break will stop, or at the very least slow down the spread of fire across the site. We continue to work with Humberside Fire and Rescue to make sure we are as prepared as possible should a fire occur, this includes preparing the site, ensure the fire service has the right equipment and they have good knowledge of the area.

Further works will continue on site at the end of summer 2023.
